GLASS
Your local glazier will supply glass and can advise you about the best type
of glass for your requirements as well as how to measure size accurately.
LEAD
GLASS MAGIC
adhesive-backed Lead is available in 4mm and 6mm widths. Each lead length is
one metre long and has a number of strips attached side by side (nine strips
of 4mm lead and six strips of 6mm lead).
To separate these use a sharp
snap-off blade knife to score along the length of the grooves until the strip
is separated. It is easier to do this several times rather than in one go.
STAINS
GLASS MAGIC Stains are
UV resistant and ready for use. They are fully mixable so you can create the
exact colours you require. The Stains are applied to the glass with eyedropper
applicators.
ESTIMATING YOUR REQUIREMENTS
LEAD - Allow about 60 metres of lead strips
for one square metre of glass for a design of average complexity. This allows
lead coverage to both sides of the glass.
STAIN - 100mls will cover an area approximately
300mm x 300mm (one square foot). It is recommended that all projects be
leaded on both sides. Stain is applied to one side only.
THINNERS
GLASS MAGIC Thinners are
used to clean your glass before leading and for cleaning your applicators
between colours.
KNIVES
Snap-off blade knife for separating the lead strips.
Curved blade knife
for cutting off the ends of lead on your panel.
ROLLER
A firm roller is needed
to roll down the lead onto the glass to make sure it is well stuck down.
SOLDERING IRON
A 60W soldering iron is
suitable for soldering the joins.
NON-ACID FLUX
Use a cottonbud to dab non-acid flux on all the joins before soldering.
60/40 SOLDER
Apply to every join.
BLACK PATINA
Dampen a cloth with
black patina and wipe this over all the lead and joins after soldering.
EYEDROPPER APPLICATORS
GLASS MAGIC eyedropper
applicators are used to flood the stain onto the glass.
